The official language in China, Taiwan and
Singapore, Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world (900+ million speakers). More than a single language,
Chinese is in fact a family of similar tongues, although traditional
Chinese culture considers the numerous linguistic varieties as dialects. In Europe, the term "Chinese" is usually employed to refer to the "standard" language, which is also known on occasions as "mandarin" as a means of distinguishing it from the dialect forms. The term "mandarin" is somewhat misleading, however, given that it may be applied to the mutually understandable dialects spoken in the northern, central and southern regions of China.
