Chinese is the most spoken language in the world (900 million speakers) and one of the six official UN languages. The official language of the People's Republic of China is sometimes referred to as "Mandarin Chinese", although there exist a great many mutually understandable dialects: Mandarin (836*), Wu (77*), Cantonese (71*), Min (60*), Xiang (36*), Hakka (34*)
and Gan (31*), for example. (* number of speakers in millions)
Given the greater difference that exists between Chinese and the majority of European languages than those existent between, for example, Spanish and English, it is wise to bear in mind that many Chinese translation projects require additional localization work.
