What is the difference
between an interpreter and a translator?
The main difference between interpreters and translators is the way
in which they communicate: interpreting is
basically an oral process, whilst translation is a written process.
Interpreters work "live", and therefore great importance is placed
on their language knowledge, communicative capacity and their response speed.
Translators, on the other hand, may "take their time" (always bearing in mind the
the urgency of the project) before responding to the challenges that arise during the translation
of a text.
In general terms, both interpreters and translators work
better in their mother tongues.Although
there is a small minority of people who are able to work indistinctly as
translators or interpreters, the majority is specialised in either one
of the disciplines.
